Updated on July 20, 2026

If you are looking for a sales coach in Perth, there is a reasonable chance you have already tried the obvious things. Attended the training. Learned the frameworks. Practised the objection-handling scripts. Maybe hired a sales manager who brought their own system. Maybe brought in a consultant with a hundred ways to increase your conversion rate.

And yet something is still not working the way you know it could. The pipeline is inconsistent. The team is capable but not performing. Certain salespeople produce results and others do not, and the difference is not obvious from the outside. Or you yourself are a capable person in most contexts and find that something changes when you are in a sales conversation that you cannot quite account for.

Mike Irving, who founded Advanced Business Abilities, spent a decade building and running sales organisations before he built ABA. At one point he had three hundred sales reps in the field across Australia, running door-to-door and business-to-business campaigns for major corporate clients. He watched the full range of what makes salespeople perform and what stops them, across hundreds of people and millions of conversations.

What he discovered, and what became foundational to everything ABA does, is that the limits in sales performance almost never live where people think they do.

What Actually Limits Sales Performance

The conventional view of sales underperformance is a skills problem. The salesperson does not know how to open properly, handle objections, close confidently, or read the room. And sometimes that is true. But skills are usually not the primary constraint in experienced salespeople.

The primary constraint is almost always what Mike calls resistance. The unwillingness to experience certain things.

The unwillingness to experience rejection, so conversations that could be had are not had. The unwillingness to experience being pushy, so direct asks get softened into suggestions. The unwillingness to experience the silence after a price is quoted, so the salesperson fills it and starts discounting before the client has said a word. The unwillingness to experience conflict, so objections get agreed with rather than engaged. The unwillingness to experience failure, so follow-up calls do not get made because the result is not yet certain.

None of those patterns are knowledge problems. The salesperson usually knows exactly what they are supposed to do. They know they are supposed to stay quiet after quoting the price. They know they are supposed to make the call. They know they are supposed to ask for the business directly. The knowing is not the issue. The resistance is the issue.

And here is the thing Mike is direct about: knowing about something is not the same as being able to think with it in the moment. You can read a book on negotiation and understand every principle in it, and still fall apart at the table because the anxiety running underneath your behaviour is not something you can think your way past. The anxiety is what wants to be addressed. Until it is, no amount of technique will hold up under the pressure of a real sales conversation where something is actually at stake.

What a Sales Coach in Perth Actually Works On

The internal state that determines external performance. Sales performance is primarily emotional, not technical. The quality of a salesperson’s internal state in a sales conversation, how present they are, how regulated they are, how much they are driven by the outcome rather than being genuinely interested in the person in front of them, determines the quality of the conversation more than any technique does. A salesperson who is anxious about making the sale will communicate that anxiety in ways they cannot control regardless of what script they have memorised. A salesperson who is genuinely present and calm will produce better conversations automatically.

Rejection and the willingness to hear no. Most underperforming salespeople have a relationship with rejection that limits how many conversations they are willing to have and how direct they are willing to be in those conversations. They soften their approach, pre-empt objections with discounts, or simply do not make the call, because the possibility of a no feels more threatening than the certainty of no result. A good sales coach helps salespeople understand what is driving that relationship with rejection and change it at the source.

The ask. One of the most consistent gaps in sales performance is the inability to ask directly for the business. Not because salespeople do not know they are supposed to ask, but because something makes directness in that moment feel more threatening than comfortable vagueness. The conversation builds well and then loses its momentum at the close because the salesperson goes indirect precisely when they want to go direct. Coaching works on that specific unwillingness.

Listening and presence. The difference between a salesperson who creates genuine trust and one who merely goes through the motions is almost always presence. Genuine listening. Real curiosity about what the other person actually wants rather than waiting for the moment to deploy the next stage of the process. That quality cannot be performed for long before it becomes visible. It is either genuinely there or it is not. Coaching helps develop it authentically.

Pipeline discipline and follow-up. Most sales pipelines are in worse shape than the people managing them realise, because the activities that would reveal the true state of the pipeline, the follow-up call, the direct conversation about whether this is actually going to proceed, are being avoided. Not through laziness but through resistance to the uncertainty of finding out. A good sales coach helps salespeople build the willingness to know where they actually stand rather than maintaining comfortable ambiguity.

Sales leadership. For sales managers and business owners responsible for a sales team, the coaching work extends to how they develop salespeople. Most sales management is focused on activity and result metrics. It does not address what is actually driving underperformance. A sales coach who can work at the level of internal state and resistance helps managers understand what is generating their team’s patterns and how to address it rather than just measure it.

Why Perth Is a Particular Context for Sales Coaching

Perth’s economy has historically been driven by industries, resources, construction, and professional services, where relationships matter enormously and where the sales process often involves significant deal sizes, long cycles, and high-trust decision-making environments.

In that context, the transactional sales techniques that work in high-volume, short-cycle environments are often counterproductive. The Perth senior business community is small enough that a reputation for pushy, technique-heavy sales behaviour travels quickly and costs more than it earns.

What works in Perth’s relationship-driven sales environment is genuine presence, the ability to ask direct questions and sit comfortably with honest answers, and the willingness to have transparent conversations about whether there is a genuine fit rather than pushing toward a close regardless. Those qualities are not techniques. They come from a specific internal state. And developing that internal state in salespeople and sales leaders is exactly what ABA’s approach is designed to do.

What Sales Coaching Is Not

It is not a script or a process. Scripts have their place in early training. They do not address what limits experienced salespeople, which is almost never a question of what to say.

It is not motivation. Salespeople who are not performing are rarely insufficiently motivated. They are running into resistance that enthusiasm cannot solve. Covering it with energy and urgency makes things worse.

It is not accountability management. Tracking activities and holding people to call volumes addresses the visible symptom without touching the cause. A salesperson who is avoiding calls because of resistance to rejection will find ways to game an activity metric while the underlying problem remains entirely intact.

It is not only for underperformers. Some of the most valuable sales coaching work happens with high performers who want to operate at a higher level, who are performing well in most contexts and have identified specific situations, large deals, certain types of stakeholders, high-pressure closes, where their performance is not matching their capability.

Why Choose Advanced Business Abilities for Sales Coaching in Perth?

Advanced Business Abilities approaches sales coaching from a foundation that most sales training never reaches. Mike Irving spent a decade in sales before he found the work that changed everything. He knows what it is like to run a sales organisation that is printing money one week and struggling to make payroll the next. He knows the specific emotional experience of being under financial pressure while trying to lead a sales team. And he knows, from direct experience and from years of working with salespeople and leaders, that the limits in sales performance almost always live in the internal experience of the salesperson rather than in their technique.

The ABA approach works on that directly. It identifies the specific patterns of resistance that are limiting each individual’s performance, whether that is the relationship with rejection, the discomfort with directness, the anxiety under pressure, or the pattern of avoiding the conversations that would actually move things forward. And it works on changing those patterns at the source rather than at the surface.

The result is salespeople and sales leaders who perform differently. Not because they have a better script, but because the resistance that was limiting their performance has genuinely reduced. Conversations that used to feel loaded become easier. Asks that used to feel forward become natural. The pipeline starts reflecting reality because the willingness to know where things actually stand has increased.

ABA works well for Perth sales organisations, sales leaders, and business owners where performance is inconsistent in ways that training and accountability management have not fixed, and where the willingness exists to look honestly at what is actually generating the gap.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sales Coaching in Perth

What does a sales coach in Perth actually work on?

A genuine sales coach works on the internal patterns limiting sales performance, primarily the resistance that stops salespeople from making asks directly, following up consistently, handling rejection without it affecting their next conversation, and staying present under pressure. It is distinct from sales training, which primarily addresses technique and process.

How is sales coaching different from sales training?

Sales training delivers scripts, frameworks, and process skills, usually to groups. It is useful for building foundational competence. Sales coaching is individual, diagnostic, and focused on what is actually limiting a specific person’s performance. In experienced salespeople, the primary constraint is almost never a technique they have not been taught. It is resistance to something they already know they are supposed to do.

Is sales coaching useful for sales managers, not just individual salespeople?

Very much so. Sales managers who do not understand what is actually driving underperformance in their team, and who rely primarily on activity metrics and accountability, will keep managing the same problems rather than resolving them. Sales coaching helps managers understand the internal patterns generating their team’s results and develop the capacity to address those patterns directly.

How long does sales coaching take to produce results?

It depends on the depth of the work and the willingness of the individual to engage honestly. Some salespeople notice significant shifts in their performance within a few weeks of addressing the specific resistance patterns limiting them. Deeper changes, particularly around long-standing relationships with rejection or conflict, take longer.

What is worth looking for when choosing a sales coach in Perth?

Look for genuine understanding of what actually limits sales performance at the internal level, not just at the technique level. Look for a diagnostic approach rather than a generic process. Be very sceptical of coaches who lead primarily with scripts, motivation, or accountability systems. Those address the symptoms rather than the source, and the results reflect that.
