Sales Coach Australia: What’s Actually Stopping Your Sales Results

Sales Coach Australia: What’s Actually Stopping Your Sales Results

Mike Irving

Updated on July 31, 2026

If you are looking for a sales coach in Australia, you have probably already tried the training. The scripts. The frameworks. The objection-handling playbooks. The motivational content that was energising for about a fortnight and then the week happened.

And the results are still inconsistent. Certain people on the team produce and others do not, and the difference does not map cleanly onto who has had the most training. Or you are personally capable in most professional contexts and find that something changes when you are actually in a sales conversation, something you cannot quite identify or control.

Mike Irving built and ran sales organisations across Australia for almost a decade before founding Advanced Business Abilities. At one point he had three hundred sales reps in the field, running campaigns across the country for major corporate clients. He watched what made salespeople perform at the very top of the range and what stopped the capable ones from getting there.

What he found, consistently, was that the limits in sales performance almost never lived where everyone was looking.

What Actually Limits Sales Performance

The standard diagnosis of sales underperformance is a skills problem. The salesperson does not know how to open properly, handle objections, or close with confidence. And sometimes that is true, particularly in new or inexperienced salespeople.

But it is almost never the primary constraint in experienced salespeople who are not performing at the level they are capable of. The primary constraint is resistance. The unwillingness to experience certain things.

The unwillingness to experience rejection, so conversations that could be had are not initiated. The unwillingness to experience being pushy, so direct asks get softened into suggestions and the client fills the ambiguity with inaction. The unwillingness to sit in the silence after a price is quoted, so the salesperson starts discounting before the client has said a word. The unwillingness to experience conflict, so objections get agreed with and deflected rather than genuinely engaged. The unwillingness to experience failure, so follow-up calls do not get made because the outcome is not yet certain and not making the call keeps hope alive.

None of those are knowledge problems. The salesperson knows they are supposed to make the call. They know they are supposed to sit in the silence. They know they are supposed to ask directly for the business. The knowing is not the problem. Something between the knowing and the doing is the problem.

Mike is direct about this distinction. You can read a book on negotiation and understand every principle in it, he says, and still fall apart when you are actually at the table. Because reading about something and being able to think with it under real pressure, when something is genuinely at stake, are two fundamentally different things. The anxiety running underneath the behaviour is what wants to be addressed. Until it is, no amount of technique will hold up when the pressure is real.

What a Sales Coach in Australia Actually Works On

Technique-first vs resistance-first sales coaching: what each addresses and when it holds up
The internal state that determines performance. Sales performance is primarily emotional, not technical. The quality of a salesperson’s internal state during a sales conversation how present they are, how regulated their anxiety is, how genuinely curious they are about the other person rather than being driven by their own desire for the outcome determines the quality of the conversation more than any script does. A salesperson who is anxious about the result communicates that anxiety in ways they cannot fully control regardless of what technique they have memorised.
The relationship with rejection. Most underperforming salespeople have a relationship with rejection that limits how many conversations they are willing to have and how direct they are willing to be. They soften their approach, avoid the ask, or simply do not make the call, because the possibility of a no feels more threatening than the certainty of no result. A good sales coach helps salespeople understand what is driving that relationship with rejection and address it at the source rather than manage around it.
The ask. One of the most consistent gaps in sales performance is the inability to ask directly for the business. Not because salespeople do not know they are supposed to ask. Because something in that moment makes directness feel more threatening than comfortable vagueness. The conversation builds well and then loses its momentum at the close because the salesperson goes indirect precisely when they intend to go direct. Coaching works on that specific pattern.
Genuine listening and presence. The difference between a salesperson who creates genuine trust and one who merely performs the process is almost always presence. Genuine curiosity about what the other person actually wants rather than waiting for the moment to deploy the next stage of the framework. That quality cannot be performed for long before people can feel it is not there. Coaching helps develop it authentically rather than as a technique to be applied.
Pipeline discipline. Most Australian sales pipelines are in worse shape than the people managing them believe, because the activities that would reveal the true state of the pipeline are being avoided. The follow-up call that would clarify whether this is actually going to progress. The direct conversation about timeline and commitment. The question that could produce a no but would at least produce clarity. Avoiding these activities maintains comfortable uncertainty. Coaching builds the willingness to know where things actually stand.
Sales team leadership. For sales managers and business owners responsible for a sales team, the coaching work extends to how they diagnose and develop salespeople. Most sales management focuses on activity metrics and results. It does not address what is actually driving underperformance. A sales coach who can work at the level of internal state and resistance helps managers understand what is generating their team’s patterns rather than just measuring them.

The Australian Sales Context

Australia has some specific characteristics that shape sales performance and how sales problems develop.

The business culture, particularly in the B2B environments that dominate senior Australian commercial life, is relationship-driven. In industries like resources, construction, professional services, and financial services, the sales process involves significant trust, long cycles, and high-value decisions. The transactional, technique-heavy approaches that work in high-volume consumer environments are frequently counterproductive in these contexts.

What works in Australian relationship-driven sales is genuine presence, the ability to ask direct questions and sit comfortably with honest answers, and the willingness to have transparent conversations about fit rather than pushing toward a close regardless. Those qualities do not come from scripts. They come from a specific internal state. And developing that internal state is what ABA’s sales coaching approach is specifically designed to do.

Australia’s geographic spread also creates specific sales challenges. Managing sales teams across multiple states and time zones, engaging clients in remote or regional markets, and maintaining relationship quality across physical distance are real operational challenges that a good sales coach can address with direct relevance to the Australian context.

Research on sales performance and emotional intelligence consistently shows that high-performing salespeople in complex, relationship-driven environments share a specific quality: they are genuinely interested in the other person rather than primarily focused on the outcome. That quality is not a technique. It is a state. And it is what coaching develops when it reaches the right level.

What Sales Coaching Is Not

It is not a script or a new process. Scripts have their place in foundational training. They do not address what limits experienced salespeople, which is almost never a question of what to say.

It is not motivation. Salespeople who are not performing are rarely insufficiently motivated. They are running into resistance that enthusiasm cannot solve. Adding urgency and energy to a resistance problem makes things worse, not better.

It is not accountability management. Tracking activity metrics and holding people to call volumes addresses the visible symptom while leaving the cause entirely intact. A salesperson who is avoiding calls because of resistance to rejection will find ways to game a call metric while the underlying pattern continues to run.

Why Choose Advanced Business Abilities for Sales Coaching in Australia?

Advanced Business Abilities approaches sales coaching from a foundation that most sales training never reaches. Mike Irving spent years in sales across Australia before he found the work that changed everything. He knows what it is like to run a sales organisation that is generating strong results one month and struggling the next. He knows the specific experience of being under commercial pressure while trying to lead a sales team through a difficult patch. And he knows, from that experience and from years of working with salespeople and leaders, that the limits in sales performance almost always live in the internal experience of the salesperson rather than in their technique.

The ABA approach works on that directly. It identifies the specific resistance patterns limiting each individual’s performance and addresses them at their source. The result is salespeople and sales leaders who perform differently not because they have a better script, but because the resistance that was limiting their performance has genuinely reduced.

ABA works with sales organisations, sales leaders, and business owners across Australia in person and remotely.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sales Coaching in Australia

What does a sales coach in Australia actually work on?

A genuine sales coach works on the internal patterns limiting sales performance, primarily the resistance that stops salespeople from making direct asks, following up consistently, handling rejection without it affecting their next conversation, and staying genuinely present under pressure. This is distinct from sales training, which primarily addresses technique and process.

How is sales coaching different from sales training?

Sales training delivers scripts, frameworks, and process skills, usually to groups. It builds foundational competence. Sales coaching is individual, diagnostic, and focused on what is actually limiting a specific person. In experienced salespeople, the primary constraint is almost never a technique they have not been taught. It is resistance to something they already know they are supposed to do.

Is sales coaching useful for sales managers as well as individual salespeople?

Very much so. Sales managers who rely primarily on activity metrics and accountability will keep managing the symptoms of underperformance rather than the source. Sales coaching helps managers understand the internal patterns generating their team results and develop the capacity to address those patterns directly.

How long does sales coaching take to produce results?

It depends on the depth of the work and the willingness of the individual to engage honestly. Some salespeople notice significant shifts within a few weeks of addressing the specific resistance patterns limiting them. Deeper changes, particularly around long-standing relationships with rejection or conflict, take longer and produce more durable results.

How does ABA work with clients across Australia?

ABA works with sales organisations and sales leaders across all Australian states and territories in person and remotely. The coaching is equally effective online and geography does not limit access to the work.
